Are you chronically stuck
in an aspect of your life?

Is there something work-wise you’d desperately like to do better, but try as you might, things just don’t shift?

Do you want to, for example, get better at:

  • delegating

  • being more visible

  • saying no more

  • saying yes more

  • staying calmer in the face of anger and conflict

  • stop constantly monitoring the feelings of people around you and have better emotional boundaries? (That’s my one.)

Notice we’re really talking about adaptive challenges - ones where the problem and solution are not necessarily clear-cut - rather than technical challenges, where you need to ‘just’ (ha!) acquire well-defined knowledge or skills.

In fact, you’ve probably tried technical solutions to this (finding out more about how to do it, tried a bunch of things out) and they haven’t worked.

If you do have a challenge like this, I’d like to invite you to an experiment I’m running, which may help you to not only make a significant shift in that specific area, but grow ‘bigger' than the challenge so you experience a freedom across the whole of your life.

I’m accepting 20 people who book in for their first session by 16th September. Keep reading to see if this feels right for you.

I’m experimenting with three things.

Two in the way that I coach, and one in terms of how you pay for it.

First experiment: Overcoming your ‘immunity to change’

Two practitioners I really respect, Bob Kegan and Lisa Lahey, developed a profound tool called the Immunity To Change map.

The Immunity To Change map helps you delve into hidden aspects of your worldview that, by protecting you from apparent harm, mean you unknowingly put one foot on the brake when you’re trying to put the other foot on the gas, as it were. End result? You get stuck, no matter how much energy you put into changing.

This gas/brake map is basically a few deceptively simple questions that provide you with an x-ray into your problem, including exposing big assumptions you probably weren’t aware of.

We then use that map to create small, contained experiments you can do in the world which help you to see in more detail the contours of those big assumptions, and experience first-hand where they’re valid and where they aren't.

Over a few months, you may find that, by going upstream to the big assumption, lots of things downstream shift - including the specific challenge that brought you to the process, but also a bunch of other stuff too.

That’s the theory anyway - I want to work with you to see how it pans out in reality.

There’s the first experiment - how effective is the gas/brake map, and can I get more experience in guiding people through it?

Here’s the second experiment.

Second experiment: Exploring other ways of knowing

If you’ve ever had coaching with me, you’ll know that it’s mainly you talking and me listening. I work in a conversational way, and we explore things via words.

Over the past few years, people I’m close to and really respect have been working with more embodied ways of knowing.

This has made me realise that I listen on lots of levels, and whilst I work quite physically in face-to-face group workshops, I rarely bring that somatic consciousness overtly into a one-on-one coaching session.

I think that means we’re missing a (massive) trick.

I’d like to gently explore how paying attention to the wisdom of your body - for example, what it opens to, closes to, tenses around, relaxes around - can give us more information about the way forward.

Therefore, as we go through mapping and overcoming your immunity to change, we’ll also be listening to what your body is telling you about your best next steps.

During our sessions, that might mean I get you to move around, or externalise what we’re talking about with objects, or just quietly tune in to what you’re feeling as you’re sitting there.

That’s the second experiment. Nothing scary, just gently exploring what adding a bodily awareness brings to the coaching experience, from both of our perspectives.

I bet you want to know more details, right?

What we’ll do together

I currently imagine we’ll do three 90-minute Zoom coaching sessions - but as I said, it’s an experiment! So we’ll find our way together.

Here’s my loose plan:

First 90-minute session: We’ll begin to reveal your Immunity to Change map (don’t worry - I’ll guide you through the whole process) and together we'll set you some homework, hopefully planning for your first Big Assumption test out in the world.

Second 90-minute session (4-6 weeks later): We’ll see how you’re doing and build on the work you’ve started. Again you’ll set yourself some homework experiments.

Third 90-minute session (4-6 weeks later): We check in again and see what’s expanded and changed. We’ll plan for how you’ll continue the work.

I mentioned above a third experiment I’m conducting - to do with how you pay me. Here it is.

Experiment three: how you pay me

After attending the brilliant Sowing Post-Capitalist Seeds 14-week course, I’d like to make some strides to make my tiny one-person business less exploitative and more generative.

First off, I’d like to break a taboo by asking: Why the heck do I need money, anyway?

The way I see it, I need money for two reasons.

  1. My family’s security - such as it is in this volatile world.

  2. Using the parts of my identity that are centred by this society to charge more from people who can afford it, and redistributing that money towards people who are marginalised than me, for them to use in their own liberation.

From my end of the things, I can’t work for free, because we live in a pay-to-live society. Someone needs to pay me in real cash money, sometimes. But not everyone, and not the same amount.

From your end of the things, I think it’s important an honest exchange happens, so psychologically/spiritually you can allow yourself to receive the benefits of our work together. That exchange can be different depending on your situation.

You’ll see below, I’ve made three levels of payment for you to be involved in this experiment.

Your job is to choose the one that feels peaceful in your body and soul, like a fair exchange, bearing in mind your current circumstances.

I solemnly promise you will receive precisely the same level of attention and service from me whatever you pay.

(There’s also the matter of different types of capital/resources, of which financial is only one of eight or more.

If you’d like to offer me social, spiritual, natural, intellectual or experiential capital/resources in exchange for what I’m offering you, go right ahead.

Just drop me an email and make your offer.

It’ll take some time, maybe, for us to work out what feels clear and clean for both of us, but that relational aspect is something capitalism doesn’t want us to have. I’m wildly open to this.)

If you’re paying me with financial capital (money!) you can choose

Option one:

£450 - which is what three 90-minute sessions of Clarity coaching would cost you (c.$600 USD)

Option two:

£100 (c.$130 USD)

Option three:

£10 (c.$13 USD)

All amounts include 20% VAT, so from your perspective the amount listed is the full amount you pay.

10% of the full amount will go towards Colours Youth Network - a brilliant Black-led project for young LGBTQ+ People of Colour here in the UK.

The process to get booked in

  1. Click on the button below for the amount you’d like to pay.

  2. You’ll see my calendar, adjusted for your timezone. Book in your first session.

  3. Go through the payment process (it’s Stripe so you can use your credit/debit card).

  4. Before you turn up to your first session, find something you’d very much like to work on.

Choose something (mainly) work-based that if it were the One Big Thing you made progress on for the rest of the year, it would significantly improve your life.

Maybe it feels a bit urgent, or it’s something you’ve tried again and again to change, with limited success.

Nothing that needs an entire personality transplant, though.

  5. Consult with a couple of people who know you well - close work colleagues, friends, family - to check if you’re in the right ball park with your One Big Thing. Adjust as necessary.

Turn up to the first session with that pretty well-formed in your mind.

  6. Once we’ve had our first session, I’ll send you the link to book in the second one.

If you’re unsure and you want to have a quick chat with me, book in a 15-minute call here.

If you feel like you might need something a bit more ongoing, I offer three and six month packages of leadership coaching. Check out leadership coaching here.

Limits

  1. I’m only keeping this page open for the next 28 days (the next New Moon), so you can book in up until 16th September 2020 for your first session.

  2. I am capping this at 20 people this time around, which, whilst it potentially makes it a big experiment, still makes sense in terms of my capacity.

  3. I ask that you go into this with the intention to complete all three sessions and give me feedback on the process.
